Sorry Arti, but as an old Clayart veteran, I have to remind you about
your ancient (in internet time) diatribes about how people at
"Ceramics Heaven" were set against you, stole your work before
it could be fired, and generally gave you a hard time.
In fact, that ranting is what got you kicked off of Clayart the
first time.

As I've said before, I'm happy as a taxpayer to support you as
a professional student. Most of the junior colleges around here
have a group of students that have been taking ceramics classes
for years and years, and they are some of my best customers.
I've always said that the best way to gain a good customer is to
get them to take some ceramics classes.

A few years ago, I took a summer school class at "Ceramics
Heaven", and I tell you I felt like, in the words of Naomi Judd,
"a John Deere tractor in a half-acre field".
I'm used to having a whole house to myself, and here I was
trying to work on one-quarter of one table. I'm used to having
two 4-foot-long ware carts to put drying pots on. In "Heaven"
I had an 18 inch-by-18 inch shelf.
I'm used to walking 100 feet to my pottery shop, not spending
an hour a day fighting North Dallas traffic.

All I can tell you is that if you want to reach your full potential
as an artist you will have to cut the cord and strike out on your own.
You will never do it as a student at a junior college.
You don't know what you are missing. It's not about finding
a "good deal" and it's not about having a staff member apologize
if they don't have the glaze buckets full.
The guy down at the county jail also has a "good deal" (free
rent) and the staff fixes 3 meals a day for him.

Sounds like a world of gumdrops and lollipops. Don't get me wrong, I'm not
being mean, I think gumdrops and lillipops are wonderful and the fact that
you haven't exchanged a bad word in 12 years is great. But don't feel sorry
for me, I love where I work.

Aggravation and viewing the waste of those around me feeds me like the good
words and beautiful art you see daily, hey, we all are inspired by different
things. Even though I despise their waste, John, Ceci, Andy and I are
actually all good friends. John's teaching me jazz bass, Andy taught me to
throw, and we're all going to Nceca together.

Quite honestly, the worst place fore me, right now in my life, would be a
world where nothing went wrong, no waste occurred, no mistakes or arguments
rang out. My favorite glaze right now is the product of some idiot mixing the
wrong glaze and pouring it into another glaze, which then was to be thrown
out. What a waste...so I threw in a bunch of zircopax and rutile and I don't
know what else, and now I love it. My favorite pot came from the idiotic
underfiring and unreduced firing of a lower division ceramics student who
utterly "ruined" a kiln load of work through ineptness. I don't know, I like
the stress of fighting over kilns, watching Andy blow up. My favorite day was
when I was made to reorganize the carts because people had misused them and I
accidently broke several pieces. I had a mental breakdown in front of
everyone and no one would even come near me for a week, GOd that was a great
question free week!

So don't feel sorry for me, heaven has always sounded pretty dull to me.

David,
I didn't say that lunatics do not exist....In the event you =
mention....Asshole(name withheld to protect the guilty) took 15 =
prototype design tumblers hot out of the bisque kiln and THREW THEM IN =
THE DUMPSTER....When his smiling face told me what his dumbass had done =
there were no harsh words exchanged....I looked him in the eye and told =
him that I wasn't going to say anything about it because god takes care =
of people like him....I am a big believer in karma.....yep that boy was =
a good example of what is wrong with academia...His lofty status as a =
lab assistant(paid student-minimum wage) had gone to his head....I was =
in dire straits that semester and only bought one bag of clay in the =
whole period....All the tumblers were designed using totally new =
designs...I took nothing from previous work...Fortunately the better of =
the designs are still in my head.....If the pots had been stolen I =
wouldn't have been so upset....That would be sort of a bassackwards =
compliment....Instead this was a jealous fit.....For almost two years =
after that I would enroll but not attend(How's that for stretching your =
taxes)....I just couldn't bring myself to use clay...I went back to =
painting and woodwork and participated in the internet =
bubbleHEHEHE....The claywork in my head got strong enough to make me =
work at it again in fall 2000....Asshole was long gone by then....He his =
now attempting to prove his manhood to himself in the Carolinas...When I =
am reminded of him, like you just did, I look down and spit on the =
ground....He was just another daddy's money loser....I don't even =
remember his last name..
There are plenty loonies in the world(you mentioned Dallas =
traffic)....Last semester there was a girl there at Ceramics Heaven that =
was telling me how a certain vase I made was going to be hers...She =
demanded a price and when I told her she said she would give me half =
thatHEHEHE...She also told me she had jumped out a 4th story window but =
was all better now because she had gotten in touch with the =
Lord..(!!!??!!!???)....I wanted to run and hide everytime I saw her, but =
she kept finding meARGHHHH.....Sure enough when I picked up that load of =
vases the one she had picked was missing....I didn't say anything to =
her...I don't count crazy people as drawbacks...You can as easily =
encounter them in the grocery store or anywhere(did I mention Dallas =
traffic?)
The lab staff has changed since then(the lab supervisor is a guy =
named Clark Kent-He seems familiar but I can't place him)...and the room =
has gotten bigger....More shelves...More elbow room....It was crowded =
when you were there because you were at a workshop...They used to be =
real crowded, but now it would be hard to fill the place up that much =
even for a good one....During my earlier time there I even tried my hand =
at production work in clay and I had no problems....People who work at =
fine art don't tend to make thousands of pieces per year....The only =
assholes we ever had around committed to production work were (you =
guessed it) staff
As for me being better off somewhere by myself, that is =
lunacy......I take care of my mother here in Dallas...We could not build =
8 kilns in my suburban backyard and Gloria is not going to quit her high =
power high paying job and I'm not giving up Gloria....It's as simple as =
that...Either I do ceramics at Ceramics Heaven or I don't do them at =
all....Someday when my mother is gone and Gloria has retired maybe we =
will want to wander....But I doubt it...Without the traffic I would have =
to take out my aggression some other wayHOHOHO
Now for you .......You like to call yourself a production =
potter....but I have been to the "Old Farmhouse Pottery" and saw mainly =
fine art....I know you country (Boonies) types wouldn't know art from =
fart but I think you are an artist....Try that on em at the local =
watering hole....They might take your boots and make you walk home =
barefoot with your butt painted pink...I am starting the rumor..."David =
Hendley is an artist, David Hendley is an artist, David Hendley is an =
artist"....It won't be long till they will be laughing behind your back =
down at the junkyard....Your wife looked like a healthy upstanding Texas =
girl....She will probably blow you off and find a real cowboyHEHEHE
