Hi all,

I have an olympic 2327 electric kiln rated for ^8 (it might be older =
than I am). It is in my machine shed, (50' X 100' metal morton building) =
no heating so it isn't much warmer than outside. I have never fired when =
it was real cold before so I am wondering is, is there a lower limit? Is =
there a point where the kiln won't be able to acheive ^6? I have been =
off work for the last two months due to washing my face with =
hydrochloric acid. (really opens up those pores). So I have had ample =
time to build pots, (I even did my first teapot, HOOBAH!) so now I have =
enough to fire. Should I go for it?

Harry in Iowa
No, it's not really cold here now but this is Iowa, it can change =
without notice.

Hi
I think your answer will depend on many things, not just the outside
temperature. The two biggies I can think of are how old the elements are,
and whether the voltage on your line is high or low.

I've fired my kiln in our unheated garage for over a decade. As long as the
kiln remains dry (rain/snow free) I've had no problems at all. Though I
switched to ^6 a year ago, prior to that I was firing to ^10 - even
through -20+ degree nights. I really don't think it matters much to the
kiln what the exterior temperature is at.

take care

Sam - in snowy, cold Melbourne. We went out to the woods today, and brought
home a face cord of 2 year old dry elm. We're going to be cozy tonight!
