paper clay and vinegar query?

updated sat 26 jan 02

I've been recently using these items/ ideas in slab construction.
My chemical engineer brother asked me about the possibility of substituting
ethylene glycol ( antifreeze) instead of vinegar in the paper clay/slip mix
or assembly water. Anyone ut there given this a try to slow drying times .?
Seems do-able, but not sure if any high-firing problems? He couldn't see any
problems with it up front.
Regards,
Dale

Dale, I don't have the answer to the question you posed but I use Magic
Water in stead of vinegar with Paper clay, it works like a charm. I have
never used the vinegar, is it just added to the paper clay to make the slip?

Why would you want to substitute anti-freeze, for vinegar? Comparatively
speaking the vinegar is benign.

-Craig,
I didn't say I wanted to, just asked if anyone had thought of it. I guess
three reasons could be:
It costs less for a gallon.
It smells better
but, mostly, It may dry a little slower.
Just wondered if it had been tried?

Dale, don't know if it's been tried or not, but I wouldn't recommend it. If
you have any questions about the potential hazards of useing antifreeze just
look at what is drained from your radiator the next time you decide to flush
the cooling system in your car.
While vinegar may smell bad it doesn't cost all that much, I believe I can
get a gallon for a coupla bucks, and besides that it's not toxic.
