hi lennye-
yea for you getting ambitious enough to create your own vent, although
basically a simple machine, they can be expensive.
i have a skutt 1227 (around 10 ft3 i think) and use an orton kilnvent
that sits below the kiln and rests on the kiln stand. i have 3-- 1/4
inch holes in the lid (around the edge) and 3-- 1/4 inch holes
clustered in the center of the base. the vents come with recommended
hole size and numbers depending on the size of the kiln. it is
important to get the holes big enough or you won't get enough draw
through them. i initially had trouble when i switched this vent from a
smaller kiln but tim frederich from orton helped out. the way i knew
was by the smell of the nasty jujus in my shop when firing.
also, make sure to test your draw by turning on the vent with the kiln
lid down, light a match and hold it over each hole, the flame should be
drawn down.
hope this helps,
