Might you have any knowledge about how barium carbonate works to reduce
scumming in clay bodies. I have unfortunately come into possession of 6000
lbs of clay which is scumming on me. It wouldn't be too bad ordinarily, but
my work is unglazed and I need a clean looking finish to my naked clay, a
stoneware fired to about 2090 F. I'm told about a half percent of Bariium
Carbonate will cure the fault, but I'm not sure how to go about getting the
chemical into the clay. My pugmill is fairly small to be running a hundred
pounds a day but that is what I shall have to do. I'm concerned about the
poisonous nature of the Barium Carbonate...I know nothing about it except
that it is supposed to be handled with care. I'm wondering about what the
concequences of having too much Barium Carbonate in the mix, as it will be
difficult to accurately assess exactly how much is in any amount of pugged
clay.
