Our little Kitsap Co WA clay group had some extra $.
We purchased a bunch of videos and donated them to a local library.
During my first year in clay I was allowed to borrow magazines from local
studio.
I felt like a sponge... because some of them were years old I also saw a
progression I would have been lacking otherwise.
I was given many of these magazines and find it very interesting when
reviewing them a year or two later. Being at another level of understanding
I always see "new" information.

Seems my mind just won't let go of this one. How do claybuds feel about
lending their clay books and videos to others? I do so often. Well, not the
videos except on one occasion, but I have allowed beginning potters and
friends to observe them in my home. I also belong to Friends of the
Library and make formal recommendations that they purchase clay books that
I'm sure local potters and clay students will use. I've recommended a few
to the local college library also ... through the librarian and the ceramic
teachers, all of whom are friends. They trust my recommendations both
because of my perspective as an active and serious learner/addict of clay,
and as a purchaser of many textbooks and supportive materials for the school
district. snip>>
Curious, too, about your feelings regarding lending copies of CM, PMI, Clay
Times etc ... my mentor sent me home with stacks when we began working
together .... in turn, when I've mentored, I've done the same ... should I
have simply supplied information about ordering their own copies? I know
the answer to this one, of course, but how do you feel? Is this not the
same situation? If you think not ... tell me why not, please? I'd like to
hear it. I've anticipated some possible responses, but won't comment on this
one again.

I concur. I don't take CM any more because it's too "brainy" for my taste.
When I see a pot I like, I wanna know how it was made, not read an essay on
the emotional rendering of the potter with relation to his experience with
Kenzan ancestry or whatever. ;) For the last week or so, I've been out of
books to read, so in spare time at the studio have been going back thru old
issues of CM and CT. (In the case of CM, what I notice is that if I like
the pot on the cover, I will like a lot of what is in that issue. If not,
then not.) Anyway, even though in most cases I have already looked through
the mag when it came in, I find new things I either missed or dismissed when
I read it the first time. It's like having a whole new subscription for
free.

Thankyou! Thankyou! This is the most right-on comment I've read about CM!
PLEASE allow me to use it when I respond to their subscription renewal
notice, which should come shortly. I am not renewing. I find CT and PMI
much more to my liking. And I have enough back issues of CM to last a
lifetime!

Guess that is why there are different magazines -- for different folks.
How boring if we only had one to choose from. Celeste in Montgomery
