Dear Friends,

Each month I present a new exhibit by contemporary artists
from the Northwest. Sometimes the artists are longtime
friends, such as January's featured artists Jan Gassner and
Ann Altman, and other times the artist is a new
acquaintance, as in the case of February's featured artist
Jill Mayberg. I'm fond of telling gallery visitors the story
of when I met Jill at the San Francisco International Gift
Show. After walking up and down aisle after aisle of the
exhibition arena and finding few artists for the gallery, I
saw Mayberg's booth and was immediately drawn to her
distinctive artistic style and warm personality. Of course
it was the artist from Portland that I loved the most. It
confirmed my belief that the Northwest has some of the best
artists in the country.

Jill Mayberg's acrylic paintings will be on display during
the month of February, the show is called, "Torn Pages."
The show opens on Tuesday, February 5 and runs through March
2, 2002. Meet Jill at our artists reception; March 8th, 5
- 7 pm. Stop by and have a taste of wine and relax with
friends.

New works: Story People, Pat Horsley, Natalie Warrrens and
Thomas Mann.

Dear Friends,

Are the dog days of winter getting you down? Just wanted to
let you know that the Mary Lou Zeek Gallery is going to the
dogs! The upcoming show will feature a pack of dog
sculptures by Portland's mixed media artist Thomas Rude.
The Dog Show will open on Tuesday, March 5 and be on display
until Saturday, March 30th. The opening reception is set
for Friday, March 8 , 5 - 7 pm. Dogs are welcome to join
the fun!

Rude, originally from Minnesota, is a relative newcomer to
the Oregon art scene after spending the last 25 years along
the northern California coast. Dogs have appeared
prominently in his sculpture and prints over the years.
Three dimensional dogs carved from redwood, some collaged
with product labels depicting dogs; others burned,
wire-brushed, painted and adorned with copper and other
metals.
His meticulous linoleum block prints feature dogs in
religious icons, mythological dogs, and even the dog
constellation, "Canis Major." His dog sculptures have
appeared in American Craft magazine and Artweek as well as
TV features including "Art Scan," KRCB-TV and "Back Roads,"
KXED Public Television, San Francisco.

April 2002

Dear Friends,

Artful Sentiments.
Our show for April started last year, as an idea to involve
100 artists. Friends and strangers agreed to the challenge,
to participate in an art show to help raise awareness of
domestic and sexual violence. Each artist was mailed a
5"x7" scratch board. Beginning with the same, simple, stark
format, the artists were asked to create, without
restraints, during one week in February. We involved seventy
-five artists from around the country, from New York to
California, they all worked simultaneously, creating in
peace.
For some, it revealed personal statements of silent
memories. Others stepped up with images of strength and
messages of hope. Visit the gallery during this month to
witness their striking and inspiring, Artful Sentiments.
All works of art will be available for purchase.

Presented by the Mary Lou Zeek Gallery, the show is set for
April - Sexual Assault Awareness Month - and will be on
display from Tuesday, April 2 until Saturday, May
4.
The opening reception will be on Wednesday, April 3 from 5 -
8 pm.

The show will benefit the Oregon Coalition Against Domestic
& Sexual Violence. This non-profit organization provides
assistance to programs around the state that serve victims
of domestic and sexual violence and seeks to change societal
conditions that cause violence to exist.

Located at 335 State Street in downtown Salem, the gallery
is dedicated to showcasing contemporary fine arts and
crafts. Open hours are 10 am - 6 pm on Tuesday - Friday,
and from 10 am - 5 pm on Saturday. The gallery is closed on
Sunday and Monday. For a sneak preview of some of the
wonderful pieces in the show, visit our web site at:

Please join us April 3rd for the reception.
