guilds - sharing our knowledge

updated tue 5 feb 02

Orchard Valley Ceramic Arts Guild on thu 31 jan 02

Our guild held a long-range planning meeting last weekend.
Many of our activities are working well, but we're also
having problems in a few areas, and we're tackling projects
where we have a lot to learn.

We thought it would be very useful to exchange information
with other guilds and cooperative studios, so we can all
benefit from one another's experiences.

As a first step, we'd like to conduct a basic survey to learn
who's out there, and what various guilds are doing. We could
then share the survey results and contact information, and figure
out how we can work together in the future. (One idea we've
already kicked around is organizing some sessions on setting up and
running guilds at NCECA 2003 in San Diego.)

If you belong to a guild or cooperative studio, and you think
it would be worthwhile to "pool our knowledge" please send
me your organization's contact info offline. Please send:

1) Guild name

2) URL (if you have a website)

3) Contact person (name)

4) e-mail address for contact person
(or postal address if e-mail is not available)

Thanks,

Bob

Bob...sounds like a good idea to me.....I belong to the Greater Lansing
Potters' Guild...we do not have a website (I understand it has been
proposed to the board)...we've been in existence since 1969....I don;t know
that I am an "official" contact person, but I would be happy to answer any
questions. ... and would love to learn more about your guild.... and
others.....judy

Hi Misty,

We'll be contacting guilds over the next couple of weeks. Once we have
a list, I will certainly publish the URLs for guild websites , if they
have one. I will pass on the contact information for any guilds
that OK releasing their info.

(Just trying to be sensitive to the privacy issue. A few guilds
have closed membership, and are not really interested in being
contacted by others.)

But the short answer is Yes, I will share as much of the guild list
as I can.

Regards,

Bob

I wonder how many others have a guild, but no coop studio. The Guild in
Annapolis is set up to have 5 meetings, 2 or 3 workshops, 2 yearly sales in the
same location for the last few years, every so often we have a jurror in and we
will have 'real' show in a gallery, occasionally there are field trips where we
will go to an artists studio out of the county. There is a Guild on the Eastern
Shore ( of the Cheaspeake Bay) with which we have started to do some joint
programs. We have a few full time potters who are doing this for a living, but
most of us are what I would call egg money potters, serious about what we are
doing, but no where near full time.

I am fortunate because where I live that I can go to classes or workshops at
Baltimore Clayworks, Lee art Center, Pine Ridge Pottery (both in Northern Va
just outside DC) And a Museum trip to DC and Baltimore are easy, Philly or
Richmond are a two-three hour drive and are day trips.

What local interaction do most of us have?

Millie in Md. where we had a 15 minute blizzard today, covered everything with
lots of fluffy white stuff. and melted off within 1/2 hour.
