"The Gift " by Lewis Hyde is also one of my FAVES.
It really opened my eyes to some ideas about the role of art in a
society. Ideas I never would have come up with on my own in this
lifetime.
I think I bought it back in the mid 1980s while at UO in Eugene.
Hmmmm, can't remember how I found out about it. Think I just pulled it
off the shelf.
Of course the subtitle is "and the erotic life of property" , so
THAT may have been what caught my eye at the time !!!!!!
But THAT was just a tease. The word means more than what you think it
means...
after a few thumb throughs realized there were no racy chapters.
Had to just settle down and read the whole darn thing and get educated
instead.
sigh!
