A few weeks ago I posted a question to secondary art teachers about =
classroom facilities, processes, etc. in regard to dust control. This is =
a problem I have tried to address (rather haphazardly) for the past 5 =
years since I came here from an elementary teaching job. Finally things =
are cooking. An assistant principal started taking me seriously last year =
and has tried to be helpful , but met with platitudes until he had me =
write him a letter outlining the situation.
That got a pledge of funds and a visit from a school architect. An old =
friend and a very smart woman, she jumped right in. Our first meeting was =
Monday this week and today she had engineers down from Indianapolis to =
assess the situation. If everyone continues to move on this I anticipate =
big changes within a year. Perseverance Furthers. (and things in writing =
speak louder than words, evidently).

I am an environmental consultant and have been conducting air monitoring for
dust a school for the past year. They are concerned about construction
activities from a new wing impacting the school. As they have a ceramics
class room I have frequently conducted monitoring in this room. Dust
monitors are fairly inexpensive to rent and easy to use. The Certified
Industrial Hygienist I am working with on this project is recommending (in
the presence of children) that 1/10 of the OSHA standards for total dust and
silica dust be used as an upper limit before dust control measures are used.
If I can be of any help feel free to contact me off-list at
