wadding/cm/duct tape

Just open up the wadding mix and it won't blow. I take George Wright's "Hair of the
Dog", a coarse sculpture clay with
lots of 30s grog, throw a pot, put it into the kiln, and fire it immediately. The
body is so open that the steam isn't trapped. Of course, if you threw that body all
day, you would have no skin left on your hands: "My pots are the ones with the
blood on them...". Anyway, since there's no reason to not use very open wadding,
just throw some coarse refractory grog into whatever alumina/kaolin mix you are
using as wadding.

Hope this helps,

Roger

so, merrie, the wadding blew up.
wet wadding, a fast early fire...pow.

i am not an expert in any way with wood firing.
but, i think the wads just blew from early heat..you were lucky.
not much mess.
itc your shelves...they will resist the wadding.
salt too.

if anyone wants a message sent to every potter in america,
send a `letter to the editor` of cm. it is the first thing read
by most potters. (in many cases, the only thing read.)
how can the staff at cm make those letters funny? they come
from potters for potters. serious folks. i have read everyone of
them for the last 40 years. first thing i do when the mag comes.

i, like many of you , tire of the chest beating and silliness that i
read in `art speak`.
i have worked very hard to make what i write honest and straight
forward. i continue to believe that we are not `made` alone.
we are the result of years of potters, both men and women that
have helped us along.
some do not understand that. they think their genius is the reason
they `think` they are great.

pots most often speak for themselves. that is why we like the pictures.
cm does that well. clear, uncluttered. the pictures are framed
with white space. look around, see what others are doing. tricky
backgrounds, multiple fonts, photoshop images and worst of all...
ADVERTS SHARING ART PAGES. very poor layout. it does nothing
for the ad, and totally nothing for the photos. (being an old black and
white newspaper guy has jaded my imagery.)
i do believe however, simplicity and clean design always wins. the
magazine shows the art, it does not become it.

each magazine has a mission. bill jones is working his magazine
`pmi` as an education/how to vehicle. school teachers are finding
pmi to be a user friendly magazine...nice job bill.. polly has the same
mission, but has been leading the charge for cone 6 electric. a noble
idea. home potters should love `claytimes`. it is for them.

`studio potter` is all about dialogue. it is about art speak and the nature
of pots. it is his vision. i cannot wade through all of it each issue.
but, i try. some very important things are said, we must keep up.
i do send money to support that institution. it is important.

cindy, duct tape those handles that are exposed to the weather.
gobs of duct tape make them shatter resistant and easier to grip.
purists will howl like bansheees, but duct tape works.

Well....Mr. Smarty Pants Mel,
I was REALLY hoping to get some dialogue going and you blew the wad mystery.
That was not even fair, since you had the answer at the bottom of a private
e-mail.....I should have sent it to Kurt............
can't even trust the Mayor of this town ; )
All kidding aside, I think you are right. The bits in a few other pots that
I looked at today are white like the wadding....well, crap. How long does it
take for a dadgum wad to dry and not blow ?!?
Your friend,
