Dear George Mackie,

I think you will find this is a difficult question to answer. A red cast =
to the hue is possibly due Sodium whereas a blue cast will come from =
Potassium. The red brown seems to suggest also that there is =
insufficient Oxygen in the reactions you are creating. It seems you need =
to encourage conditions that favour the creation of the Permanganate =
ion. But these are only tentative thoughts. Do a borax bead test with =
Manganese dioxide to check you notion about the influence of Boron.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis.
