This is a form of "Fatigue". Repetitive cycling to high temperatures =
causes the gradual relief of stress, an effect which manifests itself as =
the gradual enlargement of existing fissures through the fabric of solid =
materials. Eventually the micro-cracks spread or interconnect (The =
toilet roll perforation phase!!) and any excess force applied to the =
structure causes the catastrophe. In your case it would have been the =
effects of Gravity.
