at the end of my firing in my Alpine at cone 10....... i have a
oxy-probe..... i keep it in reduction after cone 010....
at the end of my firing i open the dampers and oxidize for 10 minutes....i
dont have many bubbles any more...
what are you other gas cone 10 fireers do at the end of your firing
I also block the ports with fiber and close the damper,,,, it takes 2 full
days for the beast to cool

I fire with pilots [Eclipse] one each side coming in back lower ports
mounted on each of thr 2 blower burners and put them on in the late
afternoon when the load is closed up with the door brickup.I leave 3 bricks
in the door set to be removable and with the lighting of the pilots I turn
the blowers and adjust the intake to a minimum , leave the damper[kiln shelf
on top of the 6' chimney ] full open and the ports in the door[aligned
with cone packs.I candle it to cherry red wich is usually the next early
am.I use hand moisture tests to feel for moisture, which should be dry feel
at cherry red.I light the big burner one side then, run part open air and
kiln still open, then in about an hour add the second burner. When cone 06
goes down I close the ports and the damper to 1'' of closed for 1/2 hour ,
then lightly reduce from then on till temp is reached indicated by all three
cone packs. My lowest cone is the last to tip and when it does I reduce 15
minutes again then clear out for 5 minutes then close up tight including
the chimney damper shelf. My kiln has a blanket over the arch and tin to
protect it from weather.I usually unload the next night just before dark
when the ware is cool enough to hold. The kiln usually fires evenly but
changing the pack can cause the need to adjust to even it out midway.I
used a pyrometer to check things before it ran away[walked] but no more
techs.

Hi Capt Mark,
I seem to have really cleaned up my blistering problem in the gas kiln with
a differnent ending routine. After a 1 hour soak, I shut down the burners.
I then open the damper and top peep for an influx of oxygen for maybe 10
min. ,then leave the damper open 1inch until it drops to 1500F or so. My
ware and shelves are heavy so I still get a slow cool.
Could it be that some of the improved results gotten by those who are
down-firing may be the result of the moving, clean oxidizing atmosphere they
would have with the burners set low and the damper open - in addition to the
slower cooling? Anyone?
