Dear Gavin,
I suspect that no one has stepped forward with suggestions because many of us
don't have a clue when it comes to formulating a clay body. Myself, I need clay
bodies for kindergartners. I try to understand the books written for grown-ups
and I choke. I would really love to learn more about this, but there don't seem
to be any useful books in the children's section of my library. What sort of
things should one put in a cone 6 stoneware body? If you or some other
knowledgeable person would be willing to post a recipe or two and indicate the
ingredients we might want to tinker with, I and other interested persons can
order supplies and get started.
Getting the supplies can be a problem for me, here, unless I need to order a
whole palette. I do have a friend traveling next week who could pick up a few
things for me if I knew by then what to ask for. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Cindy, et al,
Just to provide some grist for the mill here's what I did, with advice from
Ron Roy and Johnathan Kaplan, to get a cone 9-10 stoneware body (used at
Iowa State University) to work at cone 6. It is a somewhat fussy recipe,
but it seems to work fine. I'll give the original recipe followed by the
adapation, with analysis provided by GlazeChem v. 1.2:
ISU Dark Stoneware (Cone 9-10)
38 GoldArt clay
38 Hawthorne Bond clay
38 Kentucky OM #4 clay
7 Silica (190M)
7 Silica (325M)
7 Kyanite (100M)
7 Fireclay grog (35M)
7 Redart clay
------
149 (lbs.)
Analysis:
Na2O 0.13 Al2O3 12.36 SiO2 43.77
K2O 0.45 P2O5 0.00
MgO 0.33 TiO2 0.63
CaO 0.09 Fe2O3 0.40
Alumina:Silica ratio is 1.00:3.54
Neutral:Acid ratio is 1.00:3.63
Alk:Neut:Acid ratio is 1.00:12.36:44.80
Expansion: 50.4 x 10e-7 per degree C
Now, the adaptation:
Cone 6 Stoneware Body
20 Goldart clay
40 Hawthorne Bond clay
30 Kentucky OM-4 clay
15 Redart clay
15 Flint (190M)
23 Custer feldspar
7 Pyrophyllite
------
150 (lbs.)
Analysis:
Na2O 0.21 Al2O3 4.89 SiO2 21.44
K2O 0.56 P2O5 0.00
MgO 0.17 TiO2 0.23
CaO 0.06 Fe2O3 0.21
Alumina:Silica ratio is 1.00:4.38
Neutral:Acid ratio is 1.00:4.47
Alk:Neut:Acid ratio is 1.00:4.89:21.88
Expansion: 55.8 x 10e-7 per degree C
As indicated above, the main change was the reduction in the amount of clay
and an increase in fluxing materials to allow the clay body to vitrify at
the lower temperature.
Testing and comment is encouraged.
