ArialWorkshop Description: The Ozark Folk Center will host a
workshop, “Building and Firing a Wood-fired Groundhog Kiln”, May
18-27, 2002. The kiln will be constructed under the direction of
University of Alabama ceramics professor Lowell Baker. During the
first 6 days of the workshop professional potters and students will
construct a 100 cubic foot kiln. The stacking and firing of the kiln
will take place on Memorial Day weekend. Lowell has taught over
30 workshops in the United States and abroad, including Bolivia,
Guatemala, Nicaragua, Singapore, and Japan. He is best known
for his work with sawdust burners. His designs and inventions can
be found in several textbooks. Recently Lowell guided the
construction of a groundhog kiln in Southern Mississippi (see
Ceramics Monthly J/J/A 2000, “The Incredible Hog Chain Kiln”).

Fees: The ten-day workshop fee is $175. Those unable to attend
the full workshop may come at a cost of $25 per day, with a 3-day
minimum. Those participating in the building of the kiln will be given
priority for participating in the firing.
