Dear Llewellyn,

As usual, our English language leads to confusion.

In the context of Porcelain types and some glazes and glasses, the term =
"Hard" relates to the degree of heat needed to induce fusion, not to its =
physical durability when made. The harder a clay body or glaze is the =
higher the temperature at which it has to be fired to achieve maturity. =
Thus, Hard Paste Porcelain will fire in the range of Cone 16 to 20 and =
is composed of kaolin, silica and some sort of fusible stone, such as =
Potash felspar or Cornwall stone.

Paste in the sense used in this term is a translation from the French, a =
contraction of Pate d'Argile, otherwise, plastic clay.

Confusing, no!!

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia.
