Bill mentioned that he substituted Frit # 3134 for GB and adjusted other =
materials in his use of the Blue Hare's Fur glaze.
I've never had a problem with Gerstley Borate in any application. It's =
a powerful flux and is used frequently in low-fire and raku glazes. =
It's also a common component in ^ 6 glazes. And, it's an ingredient of =
some ^ 10 glazes I use like Rutile Blue and Copper Red.
On occasions I've had pinholing which I attributed to either the GB or =
other problems like impurities in the clay burning/gassing out. A =
higher bisque temp and a soak at bisque temp during glaze firing usually =
solved that problem.
I was very concerned about the recent unavailability of the product. =
Fortunately, for me, it's being mined again. I order my GB from my =
friend Bill Newman at Southern Pottery in Baton Rouge.
John Williams at Trinity gave me some Colemanite which I tried as a sub =
for GB. There was an obvious difference in the glazes when I used the =
Colemanite in lieu of GB.
I'm not sure about the future availability of the material. I guess I =
better get started on experiments of replacing the GB with Frit # 3134.
BTW, I always enjoy Karl Platt's posts, especially on the subject of in =
his words "Ghastly Borate." I'm not sure if he is currently subscribed =
to the List.

I hadn't heard this. There was a lot of discussion when mining was
discontinued - has it quietly
started up again without much public notice?
