During glaze testing several of us mixed formulas. One of us had run =
out of Lith Carb and sub. Lith flor. cut the amount in half, knowing the =
flouride is much stronger. It is a matt glaze and there was still alot =
of movement on this glaze. Several tile also had a bubble here or =
there, would this be attibuted to the lithium? Would the carb. tighten =
up the glaze. Thank you for any help with this.

Dear Sandy;
The bubbling is accounted for by the prescence of Fluorine Gas
leaving the glaze during the firing. Fluorine outgassing also will begin
the melt process sooner.

This minute your letter arrived I discovered that there is such a
material so I opened The Magic of Fire, by Tony Hansen and discovered
that in has 2% LiO
K2O 2.91
Na2O 4.04
Al2O3 21.69
SiO2 69.36
Now take 100 minus all the numbers I gave you, in there you will find
the LOI
In the LOI you will find the fluor.
In Hopper Rhodes book you will find an explanation about the fluor.
In Behrens's book you will find recipes for fluor. Also from your
dentist!
Just don't breath it!
Your mistake was that you knew like: "I know that coffee is stronger
than tea, so I shall put half in my tea cake"
Must be carful from names, some ceramics around me asked me quietly if
I am carful with Nepheline "cyanide" as they pronounced it. Another
one, when I explained her about Magnesium Sulphate wanted to use it as
a source to Mgo!
