randall wheels

About 13 Randall kickwheels without motors are going to be available by =
bid, probably this Spring. These wheels have bucketheads. There are some =
metal batheads but because of their cost these will have to be bid on =
separately. The wheels will have to be picked up in Port Huron =
Michigan.Anyone interested should contact me. I need to get some idea of =
what people are willing to pay so that a base bid can be set.

I have acquired a few Randall wheels, and can not get the wheel heads =
off. Is there a secret I need to know for this process?
Thanks,
Lee

It sounds to me that the Randall wheel head is on a "Morse" taper
like the tailstock of a lathe.
I have a Jepson wheel and it too uses the Morse taper since Stephen
Jepson is an admirer of the Randall wheel.
I use a 3 pound lump of lead (an old skin diving weight) which I hold
under the head and lightly tap upward and the taper breaks free. The
mass and inertia or the lead does the trick. It doesn't take a heavy
blow if the force is straight up.

Mine does this occassionally and I have to pull up hard on the splash pan into the wheel head to dislodge it. I make sure to remove it when not in use so it doesn't stick/rust in place.

Try squiting a little WD40 on the shaft and then hit with a rubber mallet. I
assume you are talking about the drophead that takes a plaster bat. If they
haven't been removed for a long time it just takes a lot of elbow greece.

Lee- the wheel head is held in place by a friction between the tapered
shaft and wheelhead..if the heads have not been removed in a while some
corrosion may "lock" them in place.. sometimes a whack on the side or the wheel head
with a piece of wood ( or a rubber mallet) will loosen them enough to be
removed.. But..first try to stand over the wheel head and exert a quick force
that is straight up from the head.. If that doesn't work then a slight hit
in the side of the wheel head usually will do the job.. NO TOO HARD as the
wheel head can be broken...

Now I think I know what we are talking about, a Morse taper fitting. It
seems a trivially simple idea, but the man Morse put a lot of effort into
working out the right angle so that the head will stick on the shaft without
wobbling, but still be easy to remove. The head should come off easily if
you rotate the wheel at a slow speed (one gentle kick) and catch the wheel
in both hands.

The wheel head bucket (for plaster bats) or flat. The bucket head use =
"PB Blaster" ( 1 800 858 6605). WD 40 is for drying stuff and not =
freeing rustly parts. You can purchase PB at most auto parts stores. =
Anyway, for a bucket spray the PB on the shaft. You want to replete this =
process for a day. I mean spray it even hour or so. Then find a brass =
rod 1/2 or wooden dowel. One person using a hammer hitting the rod/dowel =
on the center of the shaft and other putting up on the wheel head. Now =
for a flat wheel head you have to turn the wheel over and again spray =
liberal amount of PB on the shaft. Then replete the removal steps. Now =
some folks may use heat to free the head, that is ok however be very =
careful. Too much heat can damage the wheel and bearing.

hi everyone!

this is my first time posting a question, although i have been using tis
forum to help answer my questions in the past.

i am fairly new to the ceramic scene. i went to alfred university to get my
BFA, but i never really got too deep into pottery until i started teaching
at cuba-rushford central school two years ago.

anyway, i have six randall wheels, two shimpos and a brent wheel in my
classroom. i use plaster bats for the randalls and plasti-bats for the
other wheels. my students and i are much more partial to the plasti-bats
for various reasons. i am interested in switching from the cup wheelhead to
a pin wheelhead for my randalls. the problem is that i can't seem to find a
place that sells wheelheads that will fit my randalls (they have tapered
shafts). i was able to buy one from a friend in alfred, but i haven't been
able to come across any others.

does anyone know where i can more of these wheelheads? or does anyone have
a different way to change my randalls' bat system? i am so sick of making
plaster bats...

thanks so much!

Alli:
Why can't you simply make a plaster bat of hard plaster, and install
bat pins into it so that you can then place a plasti-bat on it?

this way, those that want to use plaster (either now or in the
future) can continue to do so, and those that prefer plastic have
that option as well.

Personally, I dislike the plastic bats, but we all have our own
preferences.

Hope that helps,
Wayne Seidl

I purchased a flat wheel head for my Randall wheel last christmas. I found
the Randall Wheel company using Yahoo yellow pages. Tom Randall Jr. has the
business in Rochester, NY. His dad was the Randall of Randall wheels.

You may want to reconsider - I have both the flat head for plastic bats, and
the bucket head for plaster bats. If you make the plaster bats out of
hydrastone, they are quite hard.

Cost is the issue - it was an impulse buy for me - the flat head - I agree
it is well made, etc. but I paid US$150 for the head. That's a lot of
plaster.

I find I use both heads, my Giffen grip fits the flat metal wheel head
better than on a plaster bat.

I think that maybe the Jepson wheel uses the same Morse taper that
Randall used.
Unfortunatly Jepson no longer makes wheels but he may have a few
parts left. see:
