throwing by adding coils

Cindi,
You'll get lots of tips about throwing with coils.
The two most important things I have learned about the subject, both
from Vince Pitelka in a workshop at Michael McDowell's, are to join the
coils vigorously and to score and slurry before joining the coil to work
that has been sitting for a while.
I had no appreciation about what joining "vigorously" meant until I saw
Vince at work. Now I really smear the clay together, much harder and faster
than when I first tried coil building.
Good potting!

Hi
Anyone have any tips about this technique (adding coils to throw taller)?
Should the base be somewhat firm before adding coils? Should you leave the
walls thick until all the coils are on? What is a good coil size?

Thanks!
