Hi folks,
Has any body seen "The snake in the Garden - contemporary approaches to
slipware "
at the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath UK
What`s that all about then? Is it just me that thinks its ..., well we must
not upset these "potters".
They could be the ones selecting your work for a show!
I found it very disappointing, but what do you think , am I missing something?

I saw this when it was at Aberyswyth Arts Centre at the same time as the
International Ceramics Festival.
Some I liked, some I didn't. I was surprised at some of the prices too.
I guess it's all down to personal taste.

I saw "Snake in the Garden" at Aberystwyth, during the International
Ceramics Festival, where there was such a lot going on and such
excitement, I suppose I was not as concentrated as I would usually
have been... I also did not spend a great deal of time viewing. On
the other hand, it was something of an "interesting" exhibition. (Note
that damning adjective which can be taken any which way, but usually
is said by someone who wants to sound constructive when they are far
from impressed?!)
Such diverse work, from over-the-top fussy to extreme simplicity. From
flatware to sculptural. I must admit I thought some of it shoddily and
not very well made. Slapdash when the technique really called for
care... Poorly applied slip, colour and glazes. And talk about cracks
and sharp edges! It is not something one expects from "names".
Correction: THEY can get away with what lesser mortals would be
ashamed to show, not to say what they would be "failed" for, if/when
submitting to institutions, galleries, exhibitions, associations,
guilds, etc.
Secondly, I was amazed at the prices!! OK, some were affordable, but
several thousand pounds for what could only be "corporate art". I was
not particularly impressed by the work or the art, but there you go.
Another name to toy with... And mixed up with domestic ware, well it
just distracted the eye and the mind.
Now, this sort of mixed exhibition is very difficult to pull off well
and I believe this one just did not make the grade. All the hype about
the revival of slip was simply that... Pure hype as far as I could
see. The odd really good piece got lot in the visual clutter.
I can say all this with some degree of impunity, because the
Establishment ignores us completely. I do not, however, believe "they"
will be doing much to revive slipware by showing this exhibition. It
was an exercise in exhibiting and thereby promoting a technique which
has long been out of fashion and use by artist potters... The general
impression left to the viewer, was of work which looked like everyone
had just been "having a go", were not up to scratch or near to
mastering the art, but had great fun trying and producing work
specifically for this exhibition... A shame, when a little more
careful selection would have done wonders. No I was not too impressed
either, Stephan.

I suppose its very much up to what you look for in other peoples work, I
found some of it very exciting. Other pieces were not to my taste, but
overall I enjoyed it and thought it a well balanced show.
