He was showing slides of his work, talking about his life and work, and the lecture hall was standing-room-only. Cigar in one hand, cocktail in the other, he clicked to a slide of a large, sculptural work, with jagged attachments around the upper edge. "This one is called "Jesus Christ", he said. The audience sat there in the dark for a while, studying the piece, each of us trying to work out the religious symbolism: a crown of thorns, maybe? Or a more abstract concept?
Then Voulkos took a breath and said, "It used to sit in the front hallway of my house. Every time I'd come in the door, I'd run into the thing and say, "Jesus Christ!"
