MOLINA, RAFAEL on mon 18 feb 02

This past weekend I saw a recent exhibition at the Trammel and Margaret =
Crow Collection of Asian Art in Dallas, TX. Japan in Bloom: Cultural =
and Botanical Traditions of East Asia. The arrangements in the show =
represented the Sogetsu School. The exhibition materials state:

Sogetsu School, founded in 1927 by the late Sofu Teshigahara. A firm =
believer that Ikebana practices should be both enjoyable and creative, =
Sofu developed a school of flower arranging deeply rooted in Japanese =
tradition, yet his teaching responded to the changing needs of twentieth =
century culture and progress.

The Dallas Chapter of Ikebana International contributed "beautiful and =
interpretive botanical works of art to the Japanese Galleries." =20

The containers were of as much interest to me as the flower arranging. =
Some were glass, others metal, but I found the clay containers =
intriguing. They were made by a variety of techniques including =
wheel-thrown, slab, and extrusion. Stoneware clays with a variety of =
glazes appeared to be the most common materials.

The show was only up for the weekend and I understand was very well =
attended. On Saturday there were two lectures discussing the Ikebana =
tradition.

If anyone on the List ever travels to Dallas by all means visit the =
Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art. Information about =
the collection is available at their website: =
