What you call 'halfway down' is what the cone
manufacturers call the correct position for
that cone reading. That's your ^6 there. If the
tip touches, it's actually a little above ^6.
The important thing, though, is whether the
results are what you want. If 'tip touching'
gives you a preferable result to 'halfway',
then fire to that reading; who cares what
temperature is indicated. If your work looks
better at 'a little above ^6' then fire to
that.
I'm assuming that actual ^6 ('halfway' by your
term) is not giving you the results you want,
or you wouldn't be concerned. If you are only
trying to increase the temperature because you
thought you weren't hitting an exact ^6 and
the 'rules' say you should, forget it! Only
results matter, and that can only be measured
by looking at the work itself.
