extruders are made with a U-shaped die. When installed, the

tops of the U are near the outside. The result is that much
more clay goes through the center and the extrusion curls up
so much that a bowl shape is created."

Thanks for this explanation, David. You know I'm a tool-lexic as well =
as tool ignorant....... working on correcting the latter. I appreciate =
my Bailey extruder and the pre-cut dies keep me busy beyond my =
expectations learning different ways to use them other than making odd =
totemic poles .... but the=20
bowl die was definitely my nemesis. Now that I know better, it sounds =
strange, but I kept trying to get rid of the 'curve' as the clay exited =
the extruder.... pulling/tugging/then using a deft hand to straighten =
the clay... to no avail, of course. As you say, the curve IS the bowl. =
Don't know why I didn't recognize this.... that's the "lexic" part. I =
didn't know until my claybuddy, Peter from Florida, sent me photographs =
of His extruder and bowl extrusions. THEN I understood that I'd been =
engaging in battle where not even a struggle was necessary ... guess I'm =
even more visual than I thought ..... always thought I was aural.....
Now..... after almost two years...... I have a reason for this what I =
took to be happenstance... don't think I'm a candidate for the Mayor's =
prize for Best At Comprehending What's Happening With The Clay.... drat.

In the Mojave tickled with Dannon's reminder of Hillfolk Talk .... folk =
