Dear Potters,
Hello from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. We have
finally figured out how to build the Train/Coffin kiln. Thank you to all
who helped in this effort. We now need lots of hard brick and kiln
furniture. We are one among many schools whose art department is in a
financial slump. Does anyone on the list know of where we can get these
materials either donated or discounted? We are near Ashville and Seagrove
if that helps? Please respond to jboyd@guilford.edu
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
John Boyd

John,
You might try the yellow pages physically located within range for shipping
and look for industry that uses furnaces that need relining or building and
companies that preform those services, some are are under refractories, then
at disposal sites for construction materials as well as pottery sources.Just
make sure you know the temperature range and whether the brick can be heated
and cooled in our type cycles and has the structural strength for your
project.

The people to contact is the Larken Furnace co. in Conyers, GA 800 898 4532.
I do not know about donated bricks but the person to talk to is Jim Wanch.
The last kiln I built was in Michigan. Local refractory suppliers quoted
$6500 and $8000..Jim quoted and delivery to Michigan for $3400. Give him a
call and tell him Tracy in Penland says hi. Good luck
