don't fuss about it.
the law in most areas are clear about smoke and fire:
1. most laws include `recreational fires`. you know
wienie roast. you should fall in that category.
2. make sure the folks around you..neighbors etc. are
included. (in fact, they are in awe...give them the first
pots fired...they are usually dogs anyway.) raku is the
most impressive thing you can do with neighbors...
3. my home sales fall in the category of `garage sales`.
anyone can have several a year. just don't clog the
street with cars. let the neighbors have the first mugs
out as a gift. weld the kids bikes. when you are a potter
in a nice neighborhood, one enemy will get you shut down.
the calls to the authorities....get you big time trouble.
4. making a `big deal out of it`, will always get a no
from the authorities.
5. it is easy to get forgiveness, impossible to get permission.
it was my mantra as a teacher.
6. in most cases it is about good sense. don't make clouds
of smoke...keep things tidy. organize the site. be professional.
it works.

go in and apply for a permit to carry a gun.
you will learn a great deal about rules and regs.
i do it just for the experience....i don't want to
carry a gun, but, i do like to learn about
red tape and how to deal with it. may need that
some day.

Here in Tulsa, I was told to always call the fire department to inform them when I
would raku at the museum school. I continue to alert them when I fire at home
(mid-town residential area) and at the high school. Even with the notice, they
said they would have to respond if called to the location. They have been very
nice about it (even on ozone alert days). Several firemen at the two stations I
inform have done raku. They would love it if I took my kiln and some students over
for a firing. My first visit to the fire department was with pictures, printed
info, and examples to help my case against the "burning ban".
My neighbors (mostly retired) have glazed and fired raku pots at my home and
continue to pester me to do more.

In our little (~1200 folks, 3000 dogs, 2000 guns) town in western OR, I invited the
Fire Department to our first raku firing years ago. Result: they gave us positive
pressure respirators when they upgraded, and there is a wheel in the firehouse (we
do the firing). Just-retired-chief is now a full-time potter. Most firefighters are
closet pyros, just like potters, so really shouldn't be surprised. The neighbors
always drop by when they see reduction-can or sawdust-fire smoke. We make sure that
tasty snacks and free mugs are available = no problems, ever, in twenty years.
