Moldmakers,
Do you use greensoap for mold release when pouring plaster to make a
mold? If so, do you use it full strength or dilute it with water? Thanks!

Dave

Murphy's Oil Soap is the ticket! The key is in the technique though! I like
to dilute my Murphy's 50-50 with water. Apply this mixture to the plaster
with a brush and work it into a lather. Then use the brush to remove excess
lather and allow this coat to dry a few minutes. Do this TWO more times.
After the 3rd coat I always brush the piece with a soft bristle brush just
to make sure there are no clumps of lather remaining. Allow the surface to
dry before pouring plaster. Then just apply ONE coat between pourings and
your set.
Suggestion: I always return the excess lather to my 50-50 mix. By doing this
you will get a mixture that lathers quickly and creates a nice sheen. The
lather,by the way,is what creates the sealing surface. Have a chemist
explain it to you if you're curious.
I've also used Perma-Felex's Parting Compound and this green stuff called
Poly Vinyl Alcohol but for the money and convienence there's nothing like
Murphy's.

Dave,
You know what works best for me....
Shave cream from the tube (ie. tooth paste variety),
Just brush it on the plaster you wish to protect (once).
It leaves a beautiful waxy layer.
I've heard of people putting up to
seven coats of green soap???
For alignment pins
I have used Murrets
Or whatever you call those electric screw caps for joining wires....
even better are the small test tube rubber stoppers.
The flexiblity is good for maintaining your plaster.
Good luck ,
Bruce.
ps thanks for the unity formula on Sodium Metaborate...
Anyone else who maybe interested...

CaO 0.43* 13.31%
Na2O 0.57* 19.47%
B2O3 1.14 43.72%

Has anyone tried Prell shampoo? I have only used English mold soap but the local
"mold of the month" shop said to use Prell. I'm watching this thread before I risk
the time already invested.

My all time favorite is Dr. Bonners pure Castile soap. It should be
available through your local health food store.
Plus, the bottle is a good read for those of you into weirdness!

Actually the cosmetic department is a great
for testing various "compounds" and such.
I have tried sunblock, various lotions, soaps etc.
By far and away the best is....
shave cream from the tube,
it just feels beautiful.
Just brush it on...
A dry waxy velvet barrier
to prevent plaster sticking to plaster.
No need for me to test further...
this is it!
