I buy my clay from a clay company, yes
wrapped up in plastic and boxed. I know
where the clay is mined, and have visited the
quarries. I also have knowledge of several
individual clays that come from the mine,
what temperature they mature at, color, plasticity,
particle sizes, etc.......
Does it really matter if I go and dig the clay out or
if the company does? They mix A plus B to get C.
and then I use it ,or I could mix A and B and
get C. It is the results that counts.
I agree we should have a knowledge of the
material we work with. It also makes us
responsible for what we make. Well that is my 2
cents worth.
I do have a question I am firing a 30 cu ft. down draft
gas kiln, 2 burners in front 2 in the back. Consistently getting
a lower temperature in the back by a cone. Have been
doing my reduction firings perfectly fine by only having to
move dampers at the back of kiln. How could I even
out the temperature?
