Richard Rothbard, owner of An American Craftsman in NY is
trying to do an Arts Festival at Rockefeller Center this
spring. He has the hope of doing Raku and glass blowing
there and is talking to the powers that be about permits,
temporary. I think he said something about there being
underground bunkers for propane there...

When my outdoor saggar kiln, in my neighborhood of wood
frame houses, tightly packed, was shut down by the fire
department, about 5 years ago, I was told by the
Cambridge fire dept that there is no open burning in this
city. They actually said they could by law put out your
hibachi, which I am not sure I believe. They told me that
there was no way they would give me a permit. (Made me
glad I had fired that little baby without asking for one
for 12 years.)

When I taught at MIT, however, we were able to get
temporary permits to do raku.
I don't know how any of that helps you. Probably not at
all.
Best, Judy

Hi All,
I guess this is mainly to people in the NYC area but anybody can take part.
Mark and I built and have been firing our raku kiln for about a year now. We
fire on the last Saturday of every month and will continue to do so We have
tried to get the info out but have not received much of a response This is
surprising considering we are the only studio in the 5 boroughs that do raku. We
have been getting absolutely amazing results The people who have taken part
have been overwhelmingly happy Hopefully within the next couple of days we
will have some pics up on our web site of the firings and students work. Our
next firing is Aug.27 There is still time if you want to fire with us The cost
is $65 which is less than half of others in the tri-state area What is nice
about firing with us is that it doesn't have to be a one shot deal we are
affordable and local- you can come back and fire again so you could really learn
from it Get to know the glazes, how different combustibles work, experiment
with different techniques etc. If you want more info call us or check out our
web site Thanks and hope to hear from ya's!
