god is a potter

god is a potter and he's ok,

and potters all day.

god is a potter,
brahma is his name:
inside his belly is a very hot flame.
once in a while
the world falls in,
then he starts all over again.

he's a divine drunkard
and its no shame,
cause that's the reason
no two pieces are the same.

"Pottery is a very meditative work
and can help in centering.
You may not have looked at it that way,
but anything to do with the hands is good.
Anything like pottery can=20
become an inner source of centering.
Outside, you go on centering the pot,
and inside, you go on centering yourself.
It is one of the most beautiful things a man can do.
In India we concieve of God as a potter.
In all the Indian scriptures they say that
the world is like a pot and God is the potter.
You must have heard the word 'brahma'.
Brahma means the potter, the creator of the world."

"It is a meditative process that can be
transformed almost into a ritual.
You can move into prayer and meditation through it."

If you look in the NIV (New International Version) at Jeremiah 19:1, you'll
see words like "This is what the Lord says, "Go down to the house of the
potter and buy a clay jar."" Other versions aren't so good as a
self-serving verse for potters.

I made this verse into a sign and put it up on my booth for a few shows.
God some curious comments..

Osho,
Thank you for sending in your poems. I thought they
were wonderful and I've printed them so I can write
them in a book I keep for thoughts, lists, and things
to remember.

I too always pictured God as a potter. I don't know
where I got the idea. Raised in North Carolina, I
attended southern Baptist and Methodist churches as a
child, and I don't remember mention of potters or
pottery... Still, im my mind's eye God bending over to
scoop up a handful of red Carolina clay and forming a
Mr Bill-type man never quite leaves.

I know I'll enjoy rereading and sharing your post.

A playwright by the name of Norman Dietz has written
a wonderful fable, "Old Ymir's Clay Pot". It's a metaphoric
take on themes of creation, fall, and redemption in with a Christian
flavor. It's published in a collection of Dietz's plays called
"Fables, Vaudevilles, and Plays" (or something like that).
Written, I believe, in the '60's, it may seem a little dated these
daze (sic), but the language flows with the rhythms of elders
telling the generative tales of a community.

At the risk of preaching:
then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, Genesis 2,7.
Of course God was a potter, even by Mel's definition.

(Yep, even God uses boxed clay! I guess since he'd

wasn't time to let it age properly. Good thing he
could just call Laguna!) ;)

I had that cartoon enlarged and posted in the classroom. I always pointed
it out at the beginning of the class for learning about coil construction.
I love that cartoon.

Some years ago a Dallas potter having hand problems had me fill in for her at a
church service throwing at my wheel in front of the congregation while the Priest
read a story about God as a potter written by the Priest. The printed program had
the story and Bible passages. I had to make forms that were less than perfect so
they could be balled up and rewedged at the wheel during parts of the story. I
think the message was to illustrate that God would not discard man for his
imperfections but give hope for a better life.

I won't go into clay as a life form but the clay life theory is in the archives
and on the net as one of the theorys for the origins of life on earth. Interseting
stuff to ponder.

I pulled out my concordance and found that there are many verses casting God
as a potter in the Bible. Isaiah uses it three times, plus Jeremiah and
Paul's letter to the Romans. No wonder I feel so creative (and sometimes
overwhelmed) when sitting at the wheel with a new lump of clay!

There was a song from the fifties which was something to the effect of

"he took a hundred pounds of clay...." the"HE" being God.
something about creating a woman the woman who the singer is reflecting
on.
