Cleveland Institute of Art has very nice Ceramics studios on the 4th
floor of the Factory Building - big spaces with skylights. Located in
the University Circle area, CIA is a short walk from the amazing
resources of the Cleveland Museum of Art (which has free admission), the
Garden Center (botanical gardens), several other museums, and Case
Western Reserve University. In addition to other workshop offerings,
Missy McCormick will be teaching a pottery workshop as described below.
Missy is a lively, fun person who's a good teacher and will present a
very helpful and enjoyable 2 week class at CIA this summer. I taught
their summer session some years ago and took my husband. In spite of all
the Cleveland jokes, he enjoyed his time in the city while I was busy. =20

Through altering thrown vessels on and off the wheel, this workshop will
help workshop participants build an individual and creative vocabulary
of forms from a personal perspective. The potential of an idea will be
revealed by working to explore the subtle variations through repetition.
The workshop will begin with idea generating exercises to translate
conceptual thoughts into functional vessel forms. Discussions on the
vessel, concept and containment will generate personal perspectives and
challenges for the functional pottery form. The relationship between
form and surface will be addressed and explored during each stage of the
clay process to insure a strong continuous thread throughout the work.

Instructor: Missy McCormick's clay work focuses on the concepts of
domestic comfort while exploring different approaches to the traditional
pottery form. She works with wood and soda firing to create soft subtle
surfaces that are enhanced with windows and wrapping walls of glaze.
"While pulling from architectural influences and structured stability, I
enjoy the challenge of translating feelings and thoughts of comfort as
well as objects of the home into a focused vocabulary of functional clay
vessels". Missy is a potter presently living in South Georgia after
receiving her MFA from the University of Florida. She sells her work in
galleries along with showing nationally in juried exhibitions including
"Materials Hard & Soft," Denton TX, 2002, "Strictly Functional Pottery
National," Lancaster PA, 2001, and "National Ceramics Biennial 2000:
Focus on Function" Minneapolis MN.
