If nobody is putting on an empty bowls event at NCECA I would like to ask
for help here in Pennsylvania. We are holding our first Empty Bowl Banquet
on April 15! What a day to hold a banquet. We are collecting bowls now and
we need a lot more. We already have several restaurants that are donating
soup, bread, salads and desserts. The bowls that are collected will be
displayed at Albright College for two weeks prior to the event. one and If
you can send a bowl please do so before March 31st. Send them to Nancy
List, 920 Imperial Drive, Mohnton, PA. 19540. I will be happy to report
back what we raised to donate to the Reading Emergency Shelter for homeless
men, women and children. Thank you very much. Nancy

If anyone learns of an empty bowl type project at the NCECA
in San Diego, please be sure to pass the information on to
Clayart. Thanks

How does one begin a project like this? What sponsors are involved for success?

Don,

It helps to involve a local organization such as the Food Bank.
When we did the Empty Bowls project in Charlotte, I approached
the Food Bank there, and they took on all the publicity and
organizational details (finding a location, getting food donated,
getting volunteers to help, etc, etc.). That way, "all" I had to do was
round up the bowls. That was very helpful because I don't live in
Charlotte, and doing all the on-the-ground stuff there would have
been very hard without any contacts in the community.

Having done it once, there are a few things I would do differently. I
would try to work out something with the NCECA organizers to
allow the event to be held in the same location as the conference,
or, at minimum, to allow the bowls to be collected and displayed
right at the conference site. Also, I would try to get more publicity
about the event into the conference packet, and put up more signs,
hand out more flyers about it at the conference.

You also have to decide who the audience is. Are you having the
event at the conference so that the potters will attend and buy the
bowls and/or learn about Empty Bowls (in which case you do as
much as possible at the conference) -- or are you having it as an
event for the wider local community, that just happens to coincide
with this humongous influx of potters coming to town? In other
words, what is the point of having it in conjunction with the
conference? You would probably make some different decision if
the goal was the former, rather than the latter. I think I wasn't all
that clear in my own mind, leaned toward the former, and probably
ended up doing something more like the latter.

That's what comes to mind just at the moment. If you are
interested, I'd be happy to answer any other questions about
organizing such an event. Right now, I've got a bucket of glaze
waiting to be mixed.

Chris

Hi Don,

I do not know what resources you have, but I can tell you how we worked
Empty Bowls in Southport, NC. The clay, glaze, underglaze and firing for
the project was donated by the Associated Artisits of Southport. The bowls
were thrown and some hand built by the potters (members of the
association)Some were painted by artists in the association and potters
glazed and fired the bowls. We charged $10 per bowl which bought lunch on
10/16 (National Hunger Day) which included the bowl of their choice, soup,
bread, and a drink. The soup was donated by restaurants in the area, the
bread was donated by local stores. The set-up, cooking and serving staff
was made up of association members. The energy in that kitchen was
exciting! I do not yet know how much money was raised (we donate it to the
hungry in the county where we are located) But the last time we
participated in this project, we raised over $7,000 which was split between
two sites that feed hungry people.
It's quite a bit of work and needs someone to head it up and keep it moving,
but it was well worth the effort. And if you get into the spirit of it, it's
really fun.
