strange weekend at the studio

updated wed 6 mar 02

I thought I would share my latest story. But first I will update yah on the little Japanese student in my studio class. She is doing better, I suggested after reading all of yah suggestions to have her use very soft clay and only work with 1 lbs balls. It seems to be working however one (xx##%*!!)guy in our class told her that she couldn't throw because she has weak wrist. Matter of fact according to him women can't throw as well as men because our wrist are weak! That why there are more men potters than women. I won't go into detail what I thought of him and his opinions. When it was all said and done my professor told me to be nice and the young man is staying clear of me for a while. Anyway, I think that SUSU English isn't very good yet and specially hasn't got use to the Texas slang so I don't think she understood what the guy said !

Anyway my story for the week. I have reading all the hints that yah suggest. So I thought I would use one of them. Awhile back it was mention that you could wax resist handles on your pots in the leather hard stage so your handles will dry slower and not crack. Well I am glad to tell you that it works great! however, there was one drawback in this process. And I really don't have anybody to blame except myself for not thinking ahead. (Back to the story) I put all my work in the small electric kiln that we sometimes use in the studio to bisque. No problems so far ! except later that afternoon I got a call from my professor at my office asking me what the hell did I put into the kiln because the studio was filling up with black smokeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! This was not good timing on my part. It so happens that The PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY with a group of people from the Southern Association College Accediation team was on campus in our building. They walk into the ceramic studio and my professor and staff were trying to air out the studio quickly. I can say they kinda walk through without stopping. Thankfully they weren't too upset. As you can figure out by now the wax from

the pots were smoking up the room. Our ventation wasn't on at the time. I had forgotten about the wax resist ! I can tell you now I will never forget ever again! My professor laughs now but I can't bisque any pots except on weekend. On well it's a laugh on me and a lesson learn. Life is too short if we can't learn from our mistakes and have a good laugh !.

When I got home I had several red draws to finish off my longggggggg day...

Geez Brenda, how much wax did you use and what kind? I have never had
actual SMOKE come from the kiln and I always use the liquid wax resist.

Brenan:

I find it curious that you've submitted numerous messages recently about =
your school, professor, studio, students, etc, but for some reason the =
name of the university and professor remain anonymous. Why is this?

As someone who works in Texas I would be interested in knowing more =
about the university and prof.

Chao,

Rafael Enrique

I have. One of our teachers waxed a lot of children's pieces so that she could dip
them in clear glaze. It was a summer children's program and they made the pieces,
and colored them with underglaze. That way we could have them finished in the
short time allowed for the program. There were so many of them in the load, (with
so much wax) that the art center called the fire department. The kiln exhaust
couldn't remove it from the room fast enough.
