I want to put tile on a mirror and was wondering if a different kind of m=
astic was needed to accomplish this.

TIA

This is a perfect use for RTV - silicone rubber. Unless you like the smell
of vinegar / acetic acid, use GE Silicone II. The types for windows /
caulking / doors / bathtubs / aquariums are all usable, as they're pretty
much the same formulation with different colorants and/or mildewicides.

RTV holds strongly to (clean) glass and ceramics; can be separated if you
want by working a thin knife blade between tile & glass; is soft &
compliant and thus acts as a cushion; and allows the tile and the mirror to
expand at different rates during temperature changes without breaking either.

I use adhesive silicone caulk available from any home center (Home
Depot, Lowe's, etc.) It adheres so well that, on one occasion, I
found it impossible to remove a damaged ceramic surround from the
mirror!
