If you want a smoke-free seal on your reduction container, why not place a
pedestal in a washtub of water? The pedestal would have to be 20% the height
of the cover height, assuming a cylindrical or truncated cone (aka garbage
can) cover. The hot piece would be set on the pedestal and the reduction
material would be contained in the cover.
The water would provide a perfect seal against smoke and the only oxygen
available would be limited to whatever the cover contained when placed over
the piece.
Anyone ever try this?
