Hi All! Im new to the list!
I just started playing with clay this year - im a handbuilder.
As a former screenprinter I was planning on marrying the two crafts together
this weekend by screenprinting some underglazes onto my bisqueware. Then I
started getting concerned about the actualy thickness, or rather runnyness
of the duncan underglazes I was planning on using.
Does anyone know of a glaze thickener that can be applied or if there is a
certain glaze I should be using to successfully screenprint onto bisque?
Im real excited about trying this out. Ive lost weeks of sleep this year
already just lying in bed at night thinking of new things to do with clay
and watching the clock until I can get back into my studio.
thanks all,
Niki

You might try CMC to thicken the glaze. Enough CMC and it ought to act just
like Plastisol ink. The CMC will burn out in the firing.
There has also been discussion of other transfer methods recently and in the
past. Check the archives (URL is at the bottom of each post).

Nikki,
A few years ago when I was playing around with screenprinting I bought =
Amaco underglazes in 1/8 oz tubes that's made for screen printing. I'm =
assuming they still make it. A small amount of glaze but it's very =
concentrated, thick, and goes a long way. If I remember correctly =
though, there was a fairly limited palette.

ooh ooh I know! Try adding magnesium sulfate aka Epsom salts! Try
dissolving Epsom salts in a water solution and then add A FEW DROPS to a
cup of glaze. Seriously you won't need much as you stir it into the glaze
you will see it works like magic!

Wow! You guys are awesome! I am so excited to have found y'all. I work as a
web designer for 8 hours a day and just day dream the entire time about
getting back into my studio. I just got my studio this month. I am a super
super newbie - and am just so excited to find that this community is so fun
friendly and knowledgeable. It is evident that clay has been good for your
souls.
There is so much to learn it is a bit overwhelming at times cuz I dont know
where to go first. Right now im all into "digital ceramics" and am testing
multiple ways of applying images to my creations.
As of yesterday I had never heard of the NCECA - now Im heartsick that I
cant go! Wow what a thrill it would be to meet you all and see your works.
Thanks so much for being so great! I look forward to learning from all of
you!
