In searching on the internet, I have found a site that has really helped. I
would still appreciate any words from more experienced potters, but I am
going to run some of the tests recommended on the site titled:
Are your Ceramic Glazes Food Safe?
it is run by Home Products Services Education News for Clay and Glaze, etc.

I'm also checking out more base recipe more thoroughly and may just have to
bite the bullet for a glaze calculation software.
