Dear Chris Clarke=20
So what exactly are the basic ingredients of stoneware? Clays, =
essential, with the minimum amount of low melting point materials. All =
else is filler (silica sand is cheaper than good quality clay so it =
helps to increase profitability)
Must I always fire down for a matt glaze? No, overload the glaze with a =
white clay. You will get an Alumina Matt
Does putting oxides in slip instead of on bisqueware make them safe =
under the glaze? If the glaze is insoluble, a most probable "Yes"
Why can I only get really good carbon trapping when it's on the verge of =
raining? Your kiln is tuned to get optimim energy from a limited amount =
of air. Excess air cools the flame. A rainy day gives high humidity, =
water vapour replaces air. Kiln goes into reduction at a low temperature =
before the glaze seals. Excess reduction causes free carbon.
Good questions, Simple answers.

Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia.
