They had something like this at our local New Year's
celebration. It was made by a guy from France. It 's a
huge(tallest pipe about 20 feet) set of pipes like organ pipes,
set up outside. Very organic wacky shape with lots of cut outs
and decoration. Small ones and big ones all mixed up and people
can play it from all sides. No keyboard though: Each pipe is
played by shooting the flames of a kiln burner(hooked up to a
barbecue propane tank) into the bottom. There are baffles inside
that make it moan like whale song. Small ones higher pitched,
large ones lower. A pyromaniac's DREAM....firer's heaven. This
one was played by 4 people at once. The flames would shoot out
the top. I think part of the noise was made by the metal cooling
after the flame was taken away. They had to be careful not to
leave the flame in a pipe too long or all the oxygen was gone
and the flame went out. You all gotta see one of these if you
get a chance.....
Jennifer, remembering my community in a big circle around this
thing in the Montpelier State House lawn, temps in the teens,
snow had just stopped. Everyone in a reverie......Whale song and fire

GEEZ these frame web sites drive me nuts. In the web page below
click on DOCUMENTATION. Some of the pix show people playing the
organ with their burners in hand......the first page does have a
nice description of what the organ sounds like..
Jennifer, sorry sorry...but it's totally awe inspiring

All you Pyromaniacs out there,
This is almost beyond belief - you've got to check it out. And to think it was in my
town and I MISSED it. Groan... This one's by some folks from France. A
different concept from Louis Katz's at NCECA. The fire actually goes into the pipes,
creating the sound.

"When I was in elementary school my teacher pinned a note to my shirt for my
parents to read. It said, 'Charlene is not coloring inside the lines.' My
parents contacted the teacher and asked the teacher what the purpose of
coloring inside the lines was.' The teacher didn't quite know what to say,
except that the direction she had given was to color inside the lines. My
dad told me to color any way I wanted to and when I was done coloring, to
draw a black line around my picture." Charlene Felos, Ceramics Instructor -
