i have two olympic ovals, one new with a controller and one 13 years old with a sitter. i don't know how familiar you are=
with the oval but i will tell you that the manual was not written for the oval. it is the same manual they send with all=
their kilns (i also have a smaller 2318) and i find that little of the "firing times" in it are accurate for the oval. m=
y thriteen year old kiln takes 16 hours to glaze fire to cone 6 fully (but not tightly) packed. my new one with the contr=
oller on FAST GLAZE still takes 11-12 hours to glaze fully (but not too tighly) packed (SLOW GLAZE takes around 12-14). i=
t sounds like your kiln is fine but your glazes aren't. i don't know what brand of commercial glazes you are using (i mak=
e my own), so i can't help with that part of your problem, but it sounds like your kiln did its job. maybe if you re-dip =
the glazes and re-fire you will get better coverage????? maybe since you said they were dry, they were underfired???
the manual doesn't tell you much about the oval, just not to plug the top hole in the lid. i also would leave the top pee=
p open the whole firing. it doesn't add to the firing time really. the ovals are just VERY large and take a much longer t=
ime to fire but a really very efficient when you realize the sheer quantity of pottery you can get into them.
i'm sure rob at olympic gave you some good advice, but i hought i'd add my pennies worth since i am a dedicated O. oval u=
ser. let me know how your next firing turns out or what you decide to do.
