I have someone working on a website for me. If I want to link to someone's
site do I need the organizations or person's permission? Goes to show you
what I know about websites.

You don't need the web site's permission as long as you are clear that you
are

(1) linking to another site -- not pretending the information is your own --
(2) fairly representing the contents of the other site (no libel or slander)
or
(3) imply that the other site has endorsed your site.

I don't have a current reference for this information but the whole issue
has been quiet recently. It flared up several years ago when Microsoft
started linking to information sites using frames and giving no credit to
the original site.

Karin,

It might be polite to let them know, but permission is certainly not
necessary. Links are the whole reason for the web anyway...and there are no
Internet police.

The advantage to telling whoever you're linking to is that they can be aware
of the link, and possibly let you know about changes. Some organizations
(and even individuals) also have icons or ways of linking that they want you
to use (e.g. Adobe Acrobat). Again, though, there are no Internet
police...what you might do is go ahead and add the links you want, and then
send an e-mail to all the people or organizations letting them know that
you're linking to their site.
