bee-mix cone 5 with sawdust

updated wed 20 mar 02

My wife and I went to a local supply store's semi-annual sale. They had
some cone 5 Bee-Mix with sawdust that they said was a special order that was
returned or not sold or something. Anyway, they were asking $5 per bag and
I was tempted but wasn't sure about throwing the Bee-Mix with sawdust. Does
anybody use this on a regular basis? What would be the likely application
and results when firing? I assume the piece would be lighter when the
sawdust fires out but am not sure about the finished texture.

Thanks,

Butch Rambish

ps My wife has taken up pottery again after about 20+ years since she took
it in college. I liked her work so much her parents and I got her a wheel
for christmas. Now I'm hooked. She is teaching me to throw. We had to
buy a kiln in order to fire all the stuff the two of us are making. What a
blast!

Hi Butch!

Depending on the amount of sawdust mixed into it, this clay will burn out,
with a number of randomly-placed holes, pits, and indentations. It may not
be structurally supportive, for a tall object. It will provide an
interesting mottled surface. I've mixed sawdust (and other burn-out
materials) into clay, for the delightful and unpredictable surfaces.

Best wishes!
