Jim Wunch is a great guy. I buy a lot of bricks from him and have a
world of respect for him. However, this short arch form thing needs
some reconsideration in the case of studio kilns before everyone just
goes out and builds one. If you are building a big tunnel kiln, sure,
just do 12"-18" at a time as Jim suggested. You couldn't pull out a 20
ft. arch form, so sliding a 12" form down the line makes great sense.
However, if you are just building a studio kiln, how long is it going to
be? Maybe 6 ft. long at most, probably more like 4 ft. Why would you
jack up and shim a short form, lay the brick and drop it down, move it
and do it again and again, when you could just do it once? If you need
to repair it or change the shape, you just stick the form back in, jack
it up and deal with it. In industry they just tear them down and build
new ones, 12"-18" at a time.
