You could use watered down elmers glue even. You just need a binder.

I have read that it is best to spray hairspray over the base glaze before
painting on your majolica ware. Could someone tell me if I need to use an
aerosol spray can or if I can use the more environmentally friendly stuff
and still get the same results. Thank you!!!

I'd like to request that Someone who answers this question post it to the
list rather than directly to Holly only. I'd like to know why it works, if
it's for allowing correction of mistakes, etc.

Newbie questions, gak! Glad I'm not the only Newbie.

Where I had learned painting, we where poor kibbutz members that could
not effort buying fixative. Our beloved teacher offered us to use hair
spray.
There are two kinds the hair spray, the first one makes kind of film,
keeps your hair the same way from morning at the barber to the wedding
in the evening I would not use it. Once I used fixative above
ceramic pastels, on a tray, that latter had been sprayed with a clear
glaze, to avoid spreading the powder of the pastels. As it was a tray
the glaze stayed where it was- the film went on fire and glaze
connected to the ware. You want to paint above this film, I think it
might be messy.
I offer you to use CMC 1-2%. It is kind of hard, you must apply wait
long time to be dry , apply again , wait and only than when you have a
smooth surface like it was a smooth cardboard for painting.

The second hair spray, the oily kind, from the same teacher, for
spreading oil pastel on the paper you spray and with your fingers smear
over a textured paper..
Is it food safe?
I did not eat.
Beside it is not ceramics!

Some people use hairspray to fix the surface of the majolica so that it does
not powder off in the handling of the form. Others use recipes that include
CMC or some other binder in the formula to do the same.

I have used aerosol. If you an get a fine mister with the other, go for it! You
could also spray diluted starch over it rather than hairspray. You just want an
even coating so the over painting goes on smoothly.
