Imagine a world where every potter/artist whatever you want to call yourself
didn't undercut each other on the basis of just trying to scrape by or make
a slim living OR did so because they had a spouse who could cover the losses
so you sell it cheap and say you "sold it all." Imagine at every art
fair/sale any functional item such a mug was priced at least at $15? You
can find them at the mall with a rugrat decal for $20. This might cause the
citizen fair goers to have to think more on the aesthetic side of their
purchases instead of the "blue light special" kind of thinking or how many
can I get for a dollar. Pull my finger. My son says "Toot."

When we underprice our work we hurt each other and creative process and we
have to work more--does everyone like working more and sharing less time
with family and friends? When our prices are under what you can buy at
Dayton's, Target, Walmart, whatever, we are communicating something terrible
about what we think about our work and lives to the buyer AND we are
undermining our craft's statis as an excelling art form. Do you want to be
a human manufacturer? Buy a jigger jolly. I like the Warren McKenzie idea
of affordable (easy to purport when you have another income, pension or a
spouse supporting you) for everyone. SO, just give me a copy of your taxes
and I will plug that into my sliding scale. DOESN"T WORK THAT WAY IN THIS
UNIVERSE.

SO, consider everyone selling your work for at least a certain amount (WOW,
industry does this to a certain degree) based upon some criteria--particular
form, a mug, a 10" plate, if sculpture, maybe your time figured upon an
hourly rate, something so that we are communicating that what we do is
valuable, the work is valuable and will bring something of creavitity into
that person's life.

Thank you!

I had another thought about Mel's $65 teapot. With the right markup that =
would equate to a retail of about $1250, given all the on costs if =
freight, port dues, customs charges, state and federal taxes are added =
in.
Mel! you should be famous.
Best regards,
Ivor.
