I got mine from Euclids. I got 7 shelves two different sizes with one inch holes
throughout. I had used them in Spain and they are great for raku. Why drill holes
when they are commercially made?
Euclids said nobody wanted them and I got close to the last that they had.
Maybe with a demand they would reorder.

What a great idea. Have ofter wondered why kiln shelves didn't come
ventilated like oven shelves. Always assumed that there was a good reason
why not. Am off to drill my shelves and hoping it will even out the heat
between the top and bottom of the kiln. Will report back.

Mark,
Drilling them I don't know about, but I cut them on an old Clipper
masonry saw, 3 horspower, 14" diamond blade with water squirting on it.
Damn hard stuff, it wears the blade out pretty fast.

Hello Mark,=20
You can buy Diamond Core Drills in various diameters. They are =
expensive. Get hold of a gemcraft supply magazine.

Interestingly enough, the latest development in the saga of my dud diesel=20
kiln was the arrival of my three missing kiln shelves and a new controller=
=20
circuit. It now turns out that the circuit was never faulty to begin with,=
=20
rather I seem to have a problem with the solenoid/relay/contactor /pump in=
=20
the actual burner. Well, that's what I have deduced for myself after=20
having read endless info re burners made by various manufacturers on the=20
net. However, back to holes in kiln shelves: the ones I received were,=20
surprisingly enough, 45cm in diameter with 2cm diameter holes all over,=20
placed 2cm apart from each other. Unfortunately I had to trim the shelves=
=20
from round to octagonal because they were 45cm in diameter, the same=20
measurement as the diameter of the kiln, and there was no way I could get=20
them in or out again!
I don't know how the story of my kiln will end, or if it ever will, but in=
=20
the meanwhile thanks to all who wrote to me expressing their sympathy,=20
especially Arnold Howard from Paragon (I wish you dealt in oil-fired kilns,=
=20
Arnold :) )
I am now inclined to believe that the infamous Se=F1or Bras=F3 is not a=
crook,=20
but incompetent as a business person. He is not a young man (about my=20
age, lol) and his son runs everything in their 'group' except for the kiln=
=20
section. I have now tried to appeal to his better feelings, assuming that=20
he has them.
Well, at least I now know a LOT about light oil burners, relays, solanoids,=
=20
pumps, ventilators and the like!
Fran=E7oise in Spain who will NEVER give up.

Hi, Folks,
Been watching the discussion of holes in kiln shelves.
Years ago I tried drilling them with a marked lack
of success. Found a great way to get it done, though;
a neighbor of mine does glass etching with a sand blaster,
and this makes great holes without cracking the shelf.
(I also have her sand=blast my kiln shelves clean when
they get too awful.)
