Hi Janet, and other Trannie fans!
"Tranny" is also an automotive term, short for "transmission." I think
"tranny" can refer to a broadcast (radio wave) transmission, too.
Isn't English wonderful? Let's see, I'll bring along transparencies to the
conference, driving there in my car. So I'm transporting my trannies with a
car powered by an automatic tranny.
Trannie how I love you, how I love you, my dear old tranny! (A aong, with
apologies to George M Cohen)...
Best wishes!

Trannies... Shorthand publishing lingo meaning "transparencies".
Publishers prefer to receive and work with a film transparency,
without the frame (which technically makes it into a "slide"). They
have to remove frames for colour processing, so it makes life easier
for them.
Another definition of "trannies" (used 30 years ago and therefore very
dated) is transistor radios. I never did own a tranny, which followed
smartly on the heels of those small record players... Or vice versa. I
must say I have never heard your definition of this particular
abbreviation, Lois, but then English is pretty regional, even in a
small country the size of California!
