nceca clayart mug exchange - new rule

updated sat 6 apr 02

I have a suggestion. The Clayart mug exchange at NCECA grows every year,
and it gets more and more difficult to manage it. Those who DID manage it
will agree with that. And at the same time, it bothers me when people bring
more than one mug, and expect to be able to take away more than one mug.
How the hell did this ever get by? So, in the future, I suggest "Bring one
mug, take one mug." Seems pretty obvious to me.

I am so glad you pointed that out. I think it is a wonderful idea for
Clayart friends to bring extra mugs or other items and do trades outside the
mug exchange. Donate one mug/whatever to the NCECA fellowship cup sail, put
one in the Clayart mug/whatever exchange, and then arrange trades with any
other items you bring. NCECA is a great opportunity for such exchanges.

Dear Vince,

There usually are so many places for one to go and see that perhaps some
who brought that extra mug never found the place to donate that extra one
for the benefit sale????? I would think if they bring extra mugs[above
CLAYART and the benefit ones] they should arrange trades outside the
CLAYART mug exchange with friends.Just my 2c worth.

"New rule?" Phooey--I don't even understand the OLD rule!

Perhaps I missed something, but it's unclear to me just HOW the exchange is
to work (obviously I haven't attended the conference). If I bring that
"one mug" (or small pot), how is it decided which mug I take home with
me? Are the displayed mugs labeled with the potter's name? Am I assigned
a particular mug (ala the stay-at-home exchange)? Is there some sort of
selection lottery (e.g., the person who draws the ticket numbered 1 gets
first choice, etc.)?

--Carl (confused about so many things these days)

This one is easy! Each object has attached to it the card of the person who
made it. Also inside each object is a second card, which the organizers
place into a box. Everybody lines up and picks a card from the box, then
goes in the room and gets their prize! Very fun!

Let's fix that up :)

We bring two cards, one to attach to the mug and one to put into a
container of some sort. Kathleen does a great job at shaking the container
filled with cards. This year people were lined up at the door, first come
first serve, i.e. the first in line gets to draw first out of the container
thus a greater pool. Then the Muguettes took over A Muguette Runner
would scream the name -- it was pretty loud from the excitement and their
voices were just about gone by the end of the exchange :D -- and the other
Muguettes would look for the mug in question for the Runner to hand it to
its new rightful happy -- we hope -- owner. Fun it was :)

BTW, Mark, it's not all mugs. I'm about to release the pictures for
viewing and you'll see there are other things; look for it soon. I, for
one, refuse to make a mug; a bowl would be the closest I'd go for, but
still not my bag. :)

Over the past few years I can remember one ocarina and a laser gun with
sound effect and all, nice tile, and mixed media, e.g. Barbara Brown saucer
is a selected piece of slate and someone had a nice wooden box to enclose
the mug, tequila and lime with shot "glasses." So much great stuff!

Cheers,

Mark, I don't think whether or not it is a mug is so much the issue as that some
brought multiple items and exchanged multiple items. For example bring three mugs,
tile, whatever, and get three in exchange.

I'm sorry, but I guess I wasn't clear. I was using "mug" figuratively. I
never bring mugs. What I was saying was "Bring one item, take one item."
One only, and no more than one.

I'm coming to this really late, I was traveling after NCECA and am only
now catching up on some back issues.

What's the complaint here?

One or two "mugs" what's the difference? Two mugs doesn't deprive anyone
of a mug. Maybe it makes a little more work for Cathy's Crew or takes
two more seconds to draw one more card but I doubt that they're worried
about that.

I have no problem with anyone bringing two "Mugs".
